John Straface Obituary

John Tony Straface, 86, of Morgantown, peacefully passed away after an extended illness, on Sunday, December 28, 2014, surrounded by his family, at Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, WV. John was born February 9, 1928 in Star City, WV. He was the son of the late Gennaro and Sarah Chiodo Straface. He served as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force for three years. John began his 42 year career as a federal employee with The Bureau of Mines, before moving to NIOSH, retiring in 1997 as a Supply Management Officer. For five decades John was involved in youth sports in Morgantown. In 1964, as president of the Suncrest Little League Baseball Association, he was instrumental in the construction of the baseball fields at Krepps Park. He was proud to coach his two sons, and his grandsons, as he led them on to win several championships. He was also involved in coaching grade school and Grasshopper basketball for several years. A man of strong faith, John and his wife Virginia, were long time parishoners of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Star City, WV. He was also a member of the Knight's of Columbus. John especially looked forward to the weekly Sunday dinners at his home with his family. Surviving him is his devoted wife of 61 years, Virginia Prete Straface, two loving sons and spouses, David and wife Cynthia Straface and J.T. and wife Lou Ann Straface. Also surviving him are his grandchildren Jenna Straface Oates and husband Michael, Sarah Straface, Anthony Straface and wife Rebecca, Daniel Straface and companion Shannon Morton and Nicholas Straface and companion Lauren Paras, as well as his twin great- granddaughters, Gianna and Sofia Oates. Also surviving are his brother-in-law and wife, James and Doris Prete sister-in-law Matilda Ferrise and sister-in-law Marianne Straface as well as numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his two brothers Russell and Joseph Straface and five sisters, Catherine Straface, Tressa Kotova, Sarah Armstrong, Virginia Sass and Rose Musick. John's family would like to thank all his doctors and staff while he was under their care, especially Dr. Darrell Saunders and the Mon General Hospital Infusion Center staff and Dr. Morgan Lyons all of whom provided him with exceptional care. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations can be made to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 3334 B University Ave. Morgantown, WV 26505 or St. Ursula's Food Pantry, P.O. Box 18, Pursglove, WV 26546 Family and friends will be received at Dering-Henson Funeral Home, 156 Foundry St. Morgantown, WV, from 4-8 p.m on Friday January 2, 2015 and Saturday, January 3, 2015 from 10 a.m. unit the 11a.m. funeral mass at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church with Fr. John V. DiBacco as celebrant. Entombment will follow in the St. Mary's Peace Mausoleum.
