Peggy Chappell Obituary

Peggy Chappell, 98, of Morgantown, went on to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 10, 2022 at Providence Place of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. She was born on November 15, 1923 in Morgantown to the late Ralph and Nellie Gamer. Peggy graduated from Monongalia High School, and later graduated from Kelly Miller Trade School in Pittsburg. Peggy created her own sewing business and became well known in Morgantown as a talented seamstress who designed, mended, and stitched. For many years she taught adult evening sewing classes and also taught classes at the West Virginia University Performing Arts Center. She was a long-time active member of Jones United Methodist Church, loved to play golf, travel, and was always involved in the Monongalia High School Alumni Association. One of her proudest moments was being a member of the Monongalia High School Acappella choir which performed at the White House at the request of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Peggy was not shy about offering her opinion and her engaging wit made her a wonderful storyteller and historian. Her independent spirit coupled with her sound mind, allowed her to drive and live in her beloved Morgantown home independently into her nineties. Once she moved to Pennsylvania, telephone conversations, visits from friends and family, enjoying a cup of tea, or anything sweet, were her pastime pleasures. Whether you enjoyed a lifelong friendship with Peggy or briefly met her near the end of her life, you encountered the true spirit of the remarkable woman we will forever love and remember. She is survived by her daughter Carol Phillip Edwards and her grandchildren, Eric Anna Edwards, Timothy Rebecca Edwards; her great grandchildren, Erin Edwards, Coleman Edwards, Michael Edwards, Tyler Edwards, and Sydney Edwards; and great- great grandchildren, Easton and Kingston Edwards and one remaining sister, Kathryn Gaines. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Nellie Garner, brothers Ralph and John Garner, sisters Margaret, Jessie Lee, Fannie, Francis and Clara. Peggy leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and many, many friends.Family and friends are welcome at Dering-Henson Funeral Home on Saturday, August 20, 2022 from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am service at the funeral home with Pastor Charles May officiating.
