Thomas Munroe Obituary

Tom went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 21st. At 89 years old he had lived a full life, had many dear friends, and loved his family with all his heart. Born March 10, 1928 in Glen Ridge, NJ, Tom, son of Thomas F Munroe, Adelaide Worthington Munroe, and Stepmother Hilma Hendberg Munroe, grew up in Madison and Summit, NJ and attended Summit High School where he graduated in 1946. Tom went to Rutgers University where he graduated as a proud Scarlet Knight in 1950. He was drafted into the US Army in November of 1950 and left for the Korean War in March of 1951. Tom was in the 37th Field Artillery Battalion C 'Charlie' Battery. He also served in the Army Reserves. Tom met Eugenia 'Della' Prominski in September 1952 and they were married at St. James Catholic Church in Basking Ridge, NJ in 1953. Together they owned the Somerset Hills Florist in Basking Ridge. Tom was a member of the Kiwanis Club. He attended the Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge where he ushered for 32 years and was a trustee. Tom's ashes will be interred at a later date in the church cemetery near where the historic 'old oak tree' stood. He attended the Church of the Palms in Sarasota, FL as well. Tom and Della retired in 1984 and traveled the world extensively. They also visited every state in the union and toured almost every state capitol. Tom was an avid tennis player and was known for his shot' by anyone who played against him! At some point every day, he was reading a good book. Tom and Della forged many long lasting friendships over the years through playing tennis and bridge wherever they lived. He loved the beach and swimming in the ocean as well. They retired to Murrell's Inlet, SC, then to Bradenton, FL before relocating to Morgantown, WV in 2012 to be closer to family. Tom lived by the Golden Rule 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you' and by Psalm 118:24 'this is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it'. Tom was preceded in death by Della, his loving wife of 64 years and their son, Thomas D Munroe, Jr.. His brother, David, died as a child. He leaves a daughter Kathryn and Chuck Karnack of Morgantown, WV formerly Pittsburgh, PA, a son Stephen and Susan Munroe of Van Wert, OH, a daughter in law Mary Jo Sternick Munroe of Portland, ME, 6 grandchildren Melissa, Tyler, Hunter, Davis, Travis, and Dustin and 5 great grandchildren Brooke, Chase, Travis, Thomas, and Swayze. He also leaves special cousins, nieces and nephews. Tom's family extends their thanks to the staff of Sundale Nursing Home and Morgantown/Amedisys Hospice for the care and comfort they provided during his stay. Caring services will be provided by Dering-Henson Funeral Home, 156 Foundry St, Morgantown, WV 26505. In keeping with his wishes, Tom was cremated. Friends and family will be received at the funeral home on March 10 from 12-1 pm, immediately followed by a memorial service in the funeral home chapel.
